Birthing Doula Services
“Doula” is a Greek word meaning “woman caregiver.”  Before birth became a
medical procedure
, woman caregivers would attend to a birthing mother and see
that her every need was met.   Today, a woman may have many different
caregivers throughout her pregnancy and birthing experience making a doula’s role
unique.   A doula provides continuous emotional, physical and informational
support before, during and after childbirth and supports not only the woman but her
partner as well.

A doula’s continuous support helps to decrease the need for any unwanted medical
interventions and nurtures a woman’s need for a positive, empowering birth
experience.  A doula assists the mother in entering the birthing room with a birth
plan designed from well educated choices and facilitates communication between
everyone involved in the birthing experience.

Hilary Skoglund, The Center doula, states, "My experience providing pregnancy
massage for many expecting mothers over the years gifted me my first invitation to
be a doula. I was honored when a client asked if I would consider assisting her with
the birth of her baby.  The bi-weekly pregnancy massages I provided her helped
her to feel comfortable with me.  I received this gift four years ago and it was a life
changing experience.  I knew from that moment forward I was a doula.

Since then I have received training from Doulas of North America (DONA) in which I
am currently awaiting certification. I have assisted with ten births, each one unique,
providing me with diverse experience within many different birth settings.
Combining this experience with my experience as a Licensed Massage and
Bodywork Therapist has given me a solid understanding of what it means to
support people in a truly healing and nurturing way.
"

The birth of a child is sacred and yet unpredictable.
A doula to creates a safe and
sacred space in which the birthing mother and her partner’s choices will be
honored no matter what arises.
