How to Choose a Functional Medicine Practitioner: 10 Essential Interview Questions

Choosing the right health practitioner is one of the most important decisions you can make for your health. The right practitioner can help you uncover root causes, restore balance, and finally make meaningful progress after years of frustration. The wrong one can lead to expensive protocols, unnecessary supplements, and little real change.
I am motivated to write this article because, unfortunately, I witnessed time and time again clients who begin care with our office who have been with some other holistic practitioner and still suffering with health issues after spending too much time and too much money for too long… and making little progress. After months and sometimes years of following their functional medicine practitioners' protocols and recommendations and still feeling bad, the client changes course in the attempt to finally get some answers and hopefully start feeling better and ends up in my office.
After 27 years in clinical practice—beginning with formal training in Traditional Chinese Medicine and later integrating functional medicine—I’ve learned this:
The quality of your healing depends on the quality of your practitioner’s ability to LISTEN. Perhaps more accurately, it is the practitioner's ability to ask the right questions and then really listen to the answers. Of course, the practitioner needs to be clinically knowledgeable- but if they’re not asking the right questions and paying attention to the answers, they 100% are not uncovering the underlying reasons that are CAUSING the patterns of imbalances.
At The Center Natural Health Specialists, we define functional medicine as a root-cause approach that seeks to understand why imbalance is happening—not just what symptoms are showing up. As practitioners rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, this concept is ingrained into or thinking and is a starting principle of approach to health and healing. Many of the functional medicine practitioners around today have started in Western allopathic care (symptomatic care) and have integrated more holistic principles into their treatments. At The Center, we began with a holistic perspective and have added the latest research and insights offered from Functional Medicine into our care to enhance and support our healing tools.
Healing occurs when the body and mind are supported back into balance. That process often includes physical, emotional, environmental, and psychological factors all working together.
Finding the Right Practitioner
If you are reading this, clearly you have already found the best place for natural and holistic medicine. Problem solved! You’re welcome 😊.
OK, seriously… Finding the right practitioner can be very challenging. Sometimes it’s very hard to really understand a person’s approach, skills, ability to recognize clinical red flags, how well they really listen, and who they are as a person and practitioner- just by reading their biography.
Here is a list of 10 questions I encourage you to ask when interviewing and considering your next health care team member.
[Side note- some practitioners appear to dislike being asked questions. Perhaps that is the first sign for you to move on to the next. To me, true health care is a collaborative process. I tell clients all the time that I will offer them my opinions and recommendations and I’ll always back it up with why these are my suggestions… At the same time, I also tell them that I recognize that no one knows them better than they do. I will share my opinions, but I need to know their opinions as well. Then, together, we will determine the next best steps.]
Here we go…
1. How do you define functional medicine?
A skilled practitioner should be able to clearly explain functional medicine as a root-cause, systems-based approach. Functional medicine should not feel like buzzwords or complicated jargon. It should answer one core question:
Why is this happening in the first place?
If that clarity is missing, it often reflects how the practitioner thinks clinically.
2. How do you determine the root cause of my condition?
Many patients arrive after years of detox programs, elimination diets, and supplement protocols with little improvement.
A strong practitioner should be able to explain:
· how they identify root patterns
· how they prioritize what matters most
· how they avoid symptom-chasing
True healing comes from addressing the drivers, not just the symptoms.
3. What happens when multiple systems are involved?
Most chronic illness is multi-layered.
Common contributing systems include:
· immune dysfunction
· gut imbalance
· chronic inflammation
· nervous system dysregulation
· emotional stress
· environmental exposures
A skilled practitioner does not oversimplify complexity—they organize it into a clear, actionable plan.
4. What is your philosophy on supplements?
One of the most common issues in functional medicine is over-supplementation without measurable progress.
A strong practitioner should:
· use supplements strategically
· reassess them regularly
· avoid unnecessary long-term stacking
· focus on restoring function, not dependency
If progress is not occurring, the plan should change—not just more be added.
5. How do you track progress?
Clear tracking is essential.
You should expect:
· symptom tracking over time
· functional improvements (energy, sleep, digestion, mood)
· lab data when appropriate
· clear milestones for progress
Without this, patients often stay stuck in long, unclear treatment cycles.
If we have worked together clinically, you know how I am with questions. It is very important to me to have a very tangible and concrete understanding of your experiences as you move through the healing process.
6. What does a first visit look like?
Your first visit should feel like deep listening and structured investigation, not rushed recommendations.
A strong practitioner will:
· review your full history and labs
· Hopefully ask layered, meaningful questions
· identify patterns and missing gaps
· distinguish what is known vs unknown
· begin building a clear roadmap
Again, listening for the answers to the right questions is one of the most important clinical skills in medicine.
7. How do you integrate emotional and psychological health?
Healing is never purely physical.
At The Center Natural Health Specialists, we believe healing happens when the body and mind come back into balance.
Imbalance may come from:
· emotional stress
· trauma or past experiences
· belief systems and internal narratives
· environmental stressors
· nervous system dysregulation
· physiological dysfunction
Often, multiple layers are present simultaneously.
A fundamental core principle of traditional Chinese medicine is that of yin and Yang. This includes the mind and body. We are always both. Health ailments will always influence each. Unfortunately, so often we see in conventional medicine (and too often in functional medicine), the emotional, spiritual, and psychological aspects of who you are is simply ignored.
8. How individualized is your treatment approach?
Be cautious of “one-size-fits-all” protocols.
Every patient should receive a plan tailored to:
· their unique history
· physiological response
· emotional capacity
· lifestyle and environment
If everyone receives the same protocol, important root causes are likely being missed.
Unfortunately, this is very common.
9. What happens if I’m not improving?
This is one of the most important interview questions you can ask.
A strong practitioner should be able to:
· reassess assumptions
· adjust the plan
· look for missing root causes
· clearly explain next steps
Healing is not about rigidly following a plan—it’s about responding intelligently to your body’s feedback. Healing is a process. Sometimes it may take some time to change certain patterns. However, typically, you should also be experiencing changes quickly. At The Center, we expect change quickly… literally after a few visits. I am not suggesting that after two or three visits people will be completely healed and recovered from all of their ailments (but sometimes I do), but I do expect to see very clear evidence that we are heading in the right direction. Absolutely.
10. What makes you different from other practitioners?
The most effective practitioners are not defined by tools alone—but by how they think.
A strong practitioner can:
· listen deeply
· identify patterns across systems
· integrate multiple frameworks
· adapt treatment dynamically
· explain complex ideas simply
It is not about how many tools are used—but how well they are applied together.
RED FLAGS WHEN CHOOSING A FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER
Be cautious if:
· You are not improving over time (Some conditions are complicated and will take time, however, you should be experiencing some progress quickly to confirm you are indeed on the right path. At The Center, we absolutely expect to see very quantifiable changes within one month of starting care. Be very cautious of doing the same thing and going nowhere.)
· You are given excessive supplements without clear benefit
· Your plan lacks structure or clarity
· There is no clear way to measure progress
· You feel stuck in endless experimentation
Many patients spend years in care without addressing foundational imbalances that were missed early on.
A FINAL PERSPECTIVE ON HEALING
Healing happens when the body and mind are supported to return to balance.
The body is always trying to move toward healing—not away from it.
Our role is to identify and remove what is interfering with that process.
At The Center Natural Health Specialists, we integrate functional medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine to bring a broader, more complete lens to chronic illness, inflammation, gut issues, and autoimmune conditions.
This allows us to see patterns that are often missed in conventional frameworks—and to apply more precise, individualized care.
HEALING IS POSSIBLE — BUT CHOICE MATTERS
If you remember one thing from this article, let it be this:
You are allowed to ask questions. You are allowed to expect clarity. And you are allowed to understand your care.
Healing should not be guesswork. It is a structured process of uncovering patterns, removing obstacles, and restoring balance step by step.
Be careful of practitioners who cannot clearly explain:
· what they are doing
· why they are doing it
· and how progress is being measured
Trust your experience. Your body is always communicating. Know what you know… you are most likely right.
